Webinar, Workshop, or Masterclass? Here’s what you should know!

It’s likely that you’ve noticed other coaches in the industry switch from hosting Webinars to doing Masterclasses or even hosting Workshops, and you’ve probably attended one or two of each type, but aren’t really sure what the differences are or if there really is any difference and why should you care.

I’ll explain each of the three types, what makes them important, and which one you could choose based on where you currently are in your business.

It’s likely that you’ve noticed other coaches in the industry switch from hosting Webinars to doing Masterclasses or even Workshops.

You’ve probably attended one or two of each type, but aren’t really sure what the differences are or if there really is any difference and why should you care.

In this video, I’ll explain each of the three types, what makes them important, and which one you could choose based on where you currently are in your business.

Webinars, Masterclasses, or Workshops?

Are they just fancy names that are being used interchangeably in the online world because people have gotten tired of attending or hosting webinars, or is there truly a difference?

And better yet, which one of the three is the best choice for your business?

Between the three, there are some commonalities, such as:

  • They’re all great ways to expand your reach and be seen as the expert in your field.
  • They’re amazing for you to connect with your audience and teach what you know.
  • They’re all also really great for you to invite that audience to your next level offering

Let’s start with Webinars.

The online definition of a webinar is an online presentation.

Webinars are usually presented live and can also be automated once you’ve perfected that particular presentation. Which is one of the great things that I love about webinars because once you’ve created a really great presentation, you can add it to your sales funnel and automate the bottom of your funnel.

When you host a webinar, you’re sharing your knowledge, and what you know, and are using this as a great way to establish yourself as an authority in your field.

Hopefully, you’ve done your research prior to presenting your webinar, where you have a good idea of who your audience is so that you’d know how to cater your teaching on your webinar to help them with where they are and show them why you and your expertise would be a great fit to help them along their journey.

Usually, webinars are subscribers that come from your mailing list, so most likely they’re people that already have a great sense of who you are, kind of what you do, and they want to tune in to the webinar to learn more about how you can help before they commit to buying from you.

Webinars are great starting points for you to get comfortable with sharing what you know. And if you’re still adapting to visibility and showing up online, you can host webinars without being completely visible on screen because you can substitute your visual video with other visuals such as slides or drawings during your presentation.

So if you’re trying to build your client base, practice your visibility, or are just getting started, webinars are a great place to begin to showcase your offerings, and your personality, and share what you know without too much of a “hard-sell” to move potential clients through to whatever that next step is to work with you whether it’s through a sales page or an application process.

Aright, let’s talk about Workshops.

Unlike webinars, workshops are usually something that you offer to a smaller or intimate group of people. With webinars, you can host as many people as your webinar platform can fit, but with workshops, the reason that you’d want this to be a smaller group of people is that your audience has usually paid for you to deliver the goods.

You’re going further into depth with workshops and you’re giving more how-to techniques and strategy and the people who are attending came to really learn and go deeper into that specific topic or method that you’re teaching. So you’re able to really strengthen your relationship with your attendees and have them looking forward to what’s to come.

Another great thing about workshops is that again, unlike webinars, workshops can be done virtually or in-person and because of the in-depth teaching that goes along with workshops, these are usually paid events, but they don’t have to be.

And because people are coming to your workshop already invested, you’re more likely to get a focused group of people that are coming in free of distractions, pen, and paper ready to take notes and truly learn from what you are sharing.

Although selling isn’t the focus with this type of event because you’re sharing so much value for your attendees, I also believe that it would be such a disservice not to provide a way for those who want to keep the momentum going and to continue to receive support going forward, whether that’s with another workshop, a group program, or some type of 1:1 support level so that they can continue to build on the teachings that you’ve shared with them at this level.

Comment below where you’re currently at in your business. From what we’ve talked about so far, do you think webinars are more suitable right now in your journey or if you’ve already given webinars a go are you ready to move into workshops? Let me know below.

Okay, last up are Masterclasses.

The term masterclass has been used interchangeably, it feels like, with workshops, but there are actually key differences between the two.

Like workshops, Masterclasses are paid events. They usually last between 2-hours and 3 days (or more!).

You’re really focused on high-level content with this group who are really counting on you to really know your stuff to guide them and support them directly on the masterclass so it could be a bit challenging for someone who may be just getting their feet wet with this type of teaching style.

Usually, with Masterclasses, there are exercises and action items to help the attendees work through the material with someone who’s more experienced, and with support to apply it, and advance more quickly than they would be able to if they were attempting to apply the principles on their own.

So just to recap…

We’ve talked about the similarities and differences between webinars, workshops, and masterclasses, what makes each of them important, and which one you could choose based on where you currently are in your business.
